Bond Projects
Our community is thriving, and as our population grows, so does the need for accessible and well-maintained outdoor/indoor spaces. To meet the demands of our residents and enhance our quality of life, we are proposing several exciting park expansions/improvements. Through the issuance of a general obligation bond, we aim to create a park system that caters to the diverse needs of our community members, providing recreational opportunities for all ages and interests.
Preserving our history, looking to our future with new parks, and envisioning our needs for today and tomorrow!
The proposed bond projects have derived from input from our Community, our Parks and Recreation Advisory Board and City Council. The following factors also contribute to the importance of this parks bond: many programs have reached maximum capacity due to lack of field space; the city’s obligation to our residents (past and future) to preserve our history; and finally, comp plan needs for parks as we look to the future growth of the city. Parks and Recreation facilities and programs create the opportunities for families to create memories that they may reflect on for years to come.
Trail Improvements/expansion:
Working towards enhanced connectivity and accessibility, the bond referendum also includes a trail improvement initiative, designed to change our landscape for outdoor enthusiasts and active commuters. At the forefront of this effort is the implementation of wayfinding signage, strategically placed along existing trails and pathways throughout the city.
Coraci Park Expansion:
Six multipurpose fields will be constructed to accommodate a variety of sports and recreational activities such as soccer, football, and more. These fields will be equipped with state-of-the-art lighting to extend playing hours into the evening, allowing for increased usage and enjoyment of the park. A modern restroom and concession facility will be built to provide convenience and comfort to park visitors. This facility will offer amenities for park users and spectators, ensuring a pleasant experience for all. A scenic 5K trail will be created around the existing and improved park area, offering opportunities for walking, running, and cycling. This trail will showcase the natural beauty of the park while promoting active and healthy lifestyles among community members. To accommodate the increased traffic to the park, a new parking area will be constructed north of the existing fields. This will ease congestion and provide convenient access to park facilities for visitors. An access road will be developed to connect the new amenities within the park, facilitating easy movement between different areas of the park. This road will enhance accessibility and ensure a seamless experience for park users.
Depot Park Renovations:
Depot Park is home to the oldest surviving Florida East Coast Railway (FEC) Freight Depot which is listed on the National Registry of Historic Places. This project involves the refurbishment of the interior space within the Depot structure. Renovation efforts will include structural enhancements, aesthetic upgrades, and the installation of modern amenities to ensure the preservation of historical elements while accommodating the needs of visitors. The renovated interior will showcase the history and significance of the Depot. Parking improvements will enhance accessibility, convenience, and safety for visitors to the Depot. The construction of a dedicated restrooms concession building is intended to provide essential amenities and enhance the overall visitor experience at Depot Park.
New REC West:
The main attraction of this facility will be a 12,000 square foot gymnasium, built to accommodate numerous recreational activities. This versatile space will cater to the diverse interests of our citizens. In addition to the gymnasium, Rec West will feature a dedicated office space, lobby, and common area, providing a welcoming and functional environment for both visitors and staff alike. The lobby serves as a welcoming gateway to the center, offering a comfortable space for gathering, socializing, and accessing information about upcoming programs and events.
Our common area will provide a versatile space for community meetings, workshops, and special events, fostering connections and collaborations among residents.
White Place Park Renovation:
White Place Park is one of the oldest parks in The City of Port Orange and currently not open to the community. Renovating this location with modern park features will assist in the revitalization of the surrounding area. White Place Park will now feature a winding walking path around a pond that will assist with stormwater control in the area. Whether you're taking a leisurely stroll, going for a brisk jog, or simply enjoying a peaceful moment in nature, our scenic pathway will offer a refreshing space away from daily stresses. Newly constructed playground and pavilion will also be featured. The existing pickleball courts will receive an upgrade to surfacing, improved lighting, and enhanced amenities adding to the overall experience of the already popular courts. Lastly, there will be improvements made to the parking facilities ensuring convenient access for park visitors.
Willow Run Park Expansion:
The new amenities will feature two lighted multipurpose fields, providing ample space for a variety of recreational activities and sports. Whether you're kicking around a soccer ball with friends, playing an exhilarating game of flag football, or enjoying a casual picnic with loved ones, our versatile fields offer endless opportunities for recreational activities. Adjacent to the fields, you'll find a newly constructed restroom/support building. In addition to our recreational amenities, Willow Run Park will gain a new parking facility, ensuring easy access for visitors.
